Gideon is one of those Bible folks who often gets a bad deal. Just like we often remember Peter for his gaffs, we remember Gideon for his repeated testing of God. We gloss over that Moses was a murderer, Noah a drunk flasher, Paul a persecutor, David an adulterer but we all remember Gideon’s fleece.
I like Gideon. I understand his insecurity. He lived in a time when hierarchy was king and he was the youngest of the lowest clan. A nothing, a nobody, Susan Boyle’s first appearance on the Britain’s Got Talent stage. But just like Susan, Gideon had yet to sing.
Yes Gideon tested God with the whole fleece business, wanting to make sure that he had heard God correctly. Personally, the flame thrower toting angel would have done it for me, but Gideon needed more. He was used to being the least, and God was asking him to be the most.
Later on we find Gideon asked to do the impossible, battling a huge army with just 300 men, Gideon doesn’t stop to check but trusts.
Where are you in this? Are you the younger insecure Gideon or have you learnt to trust God?
