Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm. He said: “Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. Job 38:1-3 (NIV)

I struggle with the fact that God was prepared to allow Job to go through so much, apparently to prove a point to Satan. Although Job seemed to have everything, he was also a man who feared God and lived a blameless life. Job was a man of integrity. Then all of a sudden everything he valued in life was taken from him, even his health. Job lost everything he loved except for his wife. What Job suffered makes most of my troubles seem trivial.

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:2-4 (NIV)

It took a series of unmitigated disasters for Job to look carefully at himself. What does it take for us to begin to consider what God is trying to say to us? God spoke to Job out of the storm. Is He speaking to you out of a storm? Is that what it takes to get your attention?
